This Year's Model Updates:

The Grand Cherokee is all new for 2005. Among the improvements are new four-wheel-drive systems, an independent front suspension, three excellent engine options and better ergonomics and build quality.

Pros:
  • Strong engine lineup, unmatched off-road ability, balanced handling, long list of advanced safety equipment, solid warranty.
Cons:
  • Hard plastic interior surfaces could use some padding, less cargo capacity than most midsize SUVs.

  • Transmission problems - 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Watch out on this one. They changed transmissions this year and they had a seal problem. I took mine in twice with water in the transmission. All they did was flush it and seal it with sealer, no actual repair of seal or new transmission. After the second visit, we told them it was still acting sluggish but they told us the machine could find nothing wrong. Long story short, the transmission went out yesterday while we were traveling. Had to creep home in a low gear. Now trying to get it towed. The alignment also went out at 10,000 miles and ate into the tread wear. I will never buy another one.

Got the Jeep with 75k on it; looked great and ran well until 80 k. Replaced struts, radiator, tune up( 16 plugs!) Trans now jumps into 3rd gear all the time-dealer has no idea what the problem is. Dash lights continually flash , not a bad car but expected more from jeeps flagship. Update; This jeep HAD to have been built on a Monday morning by the hungover or still drunk workers from the law. Too many gremlins and expensive fixes to mention. Will never look at another Chrysler product in my life. terrible....just terrible.

Bought the Jeep new in Dec of 04 at a great price, and after 2 1/2 years of owning it we figured out why. Build quality is the poorest of any vehicle I have owned. The V6 is so underpowered it was almost scary at times, merging onto highways was not fun. The tranny wouldnt down shift as needed to keep the RPMs and torque up. Blind spots everywhere, seats stain with rain water or condensation off a water bottle, jittery / uncomfortable ride, no room in the back seats, I could go on but there is limited space left. Traded it on an 08 Pathfinder SE V6 with twice the power.

I love my Jeep, but it wont stop breaking. The back is full of spare parts that always brake, lots of fuses and extra wire to make a fusible link from the battery. Why dont they have a fuse for the radio or power Windows? And why dont they make parts out of something other than plastic? I have been buying parts from the Audi dealership, and modifying them to work on my Jeep. Its now a Jedi.

  • Never Getting One of These Again! - 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee

We bought this Jeep used and one year old last fall. Since then it has been nothing but a money pit. The left front wheel bearings went out at 40k miles. The check engine light comes on and off constantly. The gas mileage is horrendous, much less than the sticker claims. The windshield cracked under the windshield wipers and it is clearly a defect as there are two separate cracks that line up w/ the front defrost, and it happened in winter when the defrost was running a lot. Chrysler refuses to fix this defect. Oh, and the seats stain from water! By far the worst car weve ever had.

  • Not make as good as the older jeep - 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee

This jeep is poorly made, So many problems since I brought this new. jeep . In the past I owned 2 jeeps...a 1997 lasted 259. 000 miles and 1999 both were well made and basic trouble free. Not this junk...no more jeeps after this

  • Transmission - 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Why does it seem that i have to fix the transmission in my Jeep every year. Its always the shift modulator. My buddy just got a Jeep of the same year and drove it off the lot and when he got in his drive way it did the same thing as mine. Transmission light came on and you cant switch to manual shifting. i think Jeep needs to get me a new transmission.

  • Jeep no more - 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee

The 3.7 L V-6 is a disappointment. After dealing with: transmission problems (apparently loose parts); a fuse box that took me a couple of weeks to determine where it was located and still havent gotten a good look at them to change the one I think may be responsible for the windshield wiper washer not working; a leak inside the cabin every time it rains is driving me nuts (I dont have time for this, I need my car to work full time; strange outside wind noise which you will get used to, just as people who live near airports get used to airplane noise; in other words, if your time is precious and have to work for a living dont buy this car. Take your pick of problems!

  • Never again... - 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee

My car is in the shop once again for transmission issues. The engine malfunction light is getting to be my constant driving companion. Not only is the vehicle a gas hog (dont believe the window sticker folks) but its totally unreliable. And the service I receive at the dealership matches the vehicle: SUB- PAR. No wonder the big three are in so much trouble...you get what you give.

  • Lemon, no warranty coverage - 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Have owned 2 previous Jeeps with no problems. Purchased top of the line hemi limited 4X4 quadradrive; have become very disappointed. Quadradrive system has design problem. Bad vibration between 70 and 80 MPH. Had tires balanced, Drive shaft replaced. still have same problem. Dealer and company refuse to repair. (Cant test above the area speed limit so we wont cover or repair) performance vehicles? They do not back their cars. Chrysler customer care people are rude. Do not buy one! Mileage on Hemi is bad 10.6 in city, 15 on highway at best even after break in. Read Edmunds forums before purchasing any year Grand Cherokee. Jeeps are not Jeeps any more. Bring back my old Cherokee.
